How to Apply

The FBI, just like all government jobs has a specific application process.  So specific, that it takes a lot of time to do.  Know this and be prepared.

My first tip would be for you to print out a 171 application.  A 171 is the name of the form that the government uses for their job application. Once you print it out, use it as a guide, while you fill out the questions on your computer.  Build your resume, by typing the answers to the questions as a text document, so that later when you go to the website to begin your process of filling out the 171, it will be easy to cut and paste, as you already have it done.

You will also need to fill out what is called KSA's.  Which is Knowledge, Skills and Abilities; the most time consuming part of the application. KSA' are different for every single job that you apply for.  Very rarely can you use the KSA's for one job, on another job, as the KSA questions are always different.

Tip:  Look over the KSA and match the words in your application.  For example: "Show example of skills in collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data using computer software."  Answer by reiterating the words used in the KSA's.
Use collect instead of gather, use analyze instead of looked-over, etc., and stay away from using words that are in your position description, it will be noticed, that's what you did.
Also, stay away from using terms from your previous job.  If you were a data processor for the NAWA Group.  You will need to explain what the NAWA group was.  You should not expect that a government employee will know what a corporate Acronym is.

Once you are done, check for errors in grammar and spelling.  Have someone else look it over.  Put it aside for a day and then look at it again. You will be surprised to find there are some things you may want to change.  If something seems "weak" or not clear, it probably is, and you will need to redo it.
